Managing High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a “silent killer” that quietly damages blood vessels and leads to serious health problems. We call it the silent killer because most people do not experience any symptoms of high blood pressure. While there is no cure, taking medications as prescribed and making lifestyle changes can enhance your quality of life.

Heart disease is the leading killer in the United States and around the world. However, death rates have decreased significantly because of earlier and better treatment of high blood pressure. High blood pressure leads to heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage and death which is why it is important to know your blood pressure. If you’re diagnosed with high blood pressure, you should monitor your blood pressure regularly.

If you’re taking medication for high blood pressure, do not stop without talking to your doctor first.

Some habits that can help maintain a normal blood pressure are:

  1. Eating a well-balanced diet that is low in salt

  2. Limit alcohol

  3. Regular physical activity

  4. Maintain a healthy weight

  5. Quit smoking

  6. Develop coping skills to help deal with stress

  7. Take medications as directed
